CSOs Raise Concern Over Power Department’s Actions
Dimapur’s leading civil society organizations (CSOs) have raised strong concerns about the forced installation of prepaid power meters in several homes.
The Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF), Dimapur District GBs Association (DDGBA), and GB Union Dimapur Sadar (GBUDS) said the power department acted without consent from local residents.
Committee Says Department Ignored Key Recommendations
In a press statement, committee convenor Dr. Kahuka Chishi and general secretary Yanbothung Kikon explained that a fact-finding committee was formed to study prepaid power meters in Nagaland.
The committee had suggested three major steps for the government:
-
Upgrade and strengthen power infrastructure.
-
Install prepaid meters first in government offices, institutions, and commercial buildings.
-
Give domestic consumers the freedom to choose between prepaid or postpaid meters.
However, the CSOs said the power department did not follow these recommendations. Instead, it started installing prepaid meters in homes without offering any choice.
Concerns About Citizens’ Rights and Public Reaction
The CSOs stated that this unilateral decision violates the people’s right to choose a suitable metering system.
Moreover, they warned that ignoring expert advice and public concerns could lead to public unrest, especially when the issue affects basic household utilities.
CSOs Urge Government to Reconsider Policy
The organizations have urged the Nagaland government and the Power Department to show more understanding toward affected residents.
They asked authorities to:
-
Listen to public opinions,
-
Review the current policy,
-
Follow the committee’s original recommendations, and
-
Respect the right of citizens to select their preferred metering system.
The CSOs emphasized that people deserve dignity, transparency, and choice in matters that directly impact their daily lives.
