Nagaland is taking a major step toward sustainable energy development. The Nagaland GIS and Remote Sensing Centre (NGISRSC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with World Resources Institute (WRI) India. The agreement, signed on January 7 in Kohima, aims to strengthen planning and implementation of clean energy projects across the state.
Energy Access Explorer to Guide Planning
The MoU will allow NGISRSC and WRI India to use the Energy Access Explorer (EAE). This interactive, open-source platform helps identify priority areas for clean energy interventions. It also provides data-driven insights for planners, entrepreneurs, and government institutions.
EAE is the first digital public tool designed to support climate-friendly energy transitions. By using it, Nagaland can plan sustainable energy deployment efficiently.
Supporting Nagaland’s Development Goals
Mhathung Kithan, Senior Project Director at NGISRSC, said the MoU is the next step in the state’s partnership with WRI India. He explained that the collaboration will increase transparency, shared responsibility, and measurable impact in planning Nagaland’s energy future.
Bharath Jairaj, Executive Director of WRI India’s Energy Programme, noted that EAE turns planning into actionable steps. The platform can expand energy access and decarbonize public infrastructure, especially in healthcare and education.
By applying EAE insights, Nagaland can meet its development priorities while contributing to India’s goals of 50% renewable energy by 2030 and Net Zero emissions by 2070.
Platform Launched and Expanded
The EAE platform launched in Nagaland in July 2023. It is also available for Assam, Jharkhand, and Mizoram. The platform helps planners, entrepreneurs, and government agencies make informed decisions and deploy renewable energy effectively.
