Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) advisor Rosemary Dzüvichü has reportedly received a death threat on social media linked to her advocacy for women’s reservation in Nagaland. The alarming incident has drawn strong condemnation from political and civil society groups in the state.
Complaint Filed with Cyber Crime Police
Speaking to Nagaland Post, Dzüvichü confirmed that she has lodged a complaint with the SP Cyber Crime Police, and the matter is currently under investigation. She expressed deep concern over the persistence of threats and intimidation, stating:
“Such a culture still exists in a civilised society.”
The threat was allegedly posted through a Naga Facebook group, warning her and other activists who have championed women’s reservation in elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). Dzüvichü noted that she has faced similar threats in the past but remains steadfast in defending constitutional rights and women’s empowerment.
Women’s Representation in Nagaland
Referring to recent elections, Dzüvichü highlighted that over 100 women now hold seats in ULBs, reflecting the implementation of Supreme Court directives and reinforcing that women’s rights are human rights.
“Killing me with a bullet will not stop Naga women from articulating their rights,” she asserted.
PUCL Intervention
The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has also urged the Nagaland Chief Secretary to take cognizance of the posts on the social media platform ‘Unified Nagaland For Christ’, and act against individuals responsible for issuing threats.
NPF Condemns the Threat
The Naga People’s Front (NPF) strongly condemned the death threat and derogatory remarks directed at Dr. Rosemary Dzüvichü.
-
NPF described the threat as a cowardly act and a direct assault on the dignity of Naga women and democratic values.
-
The party highlighted that such behavior is morally unacceptable and constitutes a criminal offence under the IPC and IT Act, which prohibit online harassment, threats, and hate speech.
Call for Swift Action
NPF urged the state government, law enforcement, and cyber crime authorities to:
-
Trace the origin of the posts.
-
Register an FIR without delay.
-
Prosecute those responsible.
-
Ensure protection for Dr. Dzüvichü and other women activists facing intimidation.
The party warned that allowing criminal intimidation to go unchecked could embolden those trying to silence women’s voices and undermine progress in Nagaland.
NPF expressed full solidarity with Dr. Dzüvichü and the NMA, emphasizing that such cowardly acts will never dampen the collective spirit for justice and equality.
