Nagaland’s 62nd Statehood Day celebrations in Kohima were overshadowed by accessibility concerns, leaving the state’s Disability Commissioner, Diethono Nakhro, unable to fully participate despite being officially invited.

Nakhro, a well-known advocate for disability rights in Nagaland, expressed her frustration over the lack of proper provisions for persons with disabilities (PwDs) at the event. Despite her official invitation, she was unable to access the seating area designated for senior government officials and department heads due to accessibility barriers.

Lack of Accessible Infrastructure at Statehood Day Event

Speaking to reporters, Nakhro highlighted the challenges she faced when trying to reach the seating area. An official from the Home Department suggested she sit behind the performers, but Nakhro questioned the purpose of attending an event where she couldn’t even see the proceedings. She emphasized that accessibility goes beyond simply entering a building—it involves ensuring that key areas, such as the podium and seating for important attendees, are accessible to everyone.

Nakhro raised concerns about the lack of awareness within government departments, noting that despite numerous campaigns, barriers still prevent people with disabilities from fully engaging in public life. She criticized the delay in making necessary changes, stressing that accessibility should be regarded as an essential facility and not an afterthought.

Raising Awareness for a More Inclusive Society

“Why invite me to an event if there are no provisions to allow me to attend?” Nakhro questioned, further pointing out that if she, as the Disability Commissioner, encounters such barriers, the broader disabled population faces even greater challenges.

Nakhro also raised concerns about the accessibility provisions at the Hornbill Festival venue, which is another major event in the state. While some improvements, such as accessible toilets, have been made, these facilities are often placed in inconvenient locations, limiting their effectiveness.

Moving Forward: Continuing the Fight for Accessibility

Despite these setbacks, Nakhro remains hopeful and committed to raising awareness. She plans to inspect the festival venue as Nagaland prepares for Disability Day on December 3. She also emphasized the importance of continuing collaboration with the government to create a more inclusive society and address the ongoing accessibility issues.

Nakhro noted that the delay in addressing these concerns is a significant roadblock as the state works toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to inclusive development.
