Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a significant initiative to promote ‘swadeshi’ (Indian) products. During a gathering at Gandhi Ashram on October 2, 2024, he revealed that there will be a 25% discount on khadi products for a duration of 108 days.

While paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, Adityanath emphasized the importance of choosing local products as gifts. He stated, “This initiative will create more employment opportunities and help realize the vision of a self-reliant India.” He encouraged citizens to prioritize local items over foreign goods, particularly during festive seasons.

Gandhi’s Legacy and the Concept of Self-Reliance

Highlighting the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, Adityanath remarked, “Gandhi was a pivotal figure in our independence struggle. His ideals of cleanliness, empowerment, and self-reliance remain relevant today.” He connected this initiative to the ongoing Swachh Bharat Mission, which has facilitated the construction of toilets in over 12 crore homes, underscoring its significance for women’s dignity and societal self-reliance.

Global Examples of Self-Reliance

The Chief Minister pointed out that countries such as the US, France, Germany, and Japan have achieved power and capability through self-reliance. He linked PM Modi’s “Vocal for Local” campaign to Gandhi’s vision of promoting local entrepreneurship.

A Tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri

In addition to honoring Gandhi, Adityanath paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose birth anniversary also falls on October 2. He praised Shastri’s role in advancing food security and highlighted his dedication to Gandhi’s principles during India’s freedom movement.
